Our Datasources We use the following data from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to peform this query. FEC updates this data once a month, so we cache it for short time-periods to improve responsiveness without losing accuracy. Please visit these sites for more complete domain-specific information. Back to top How We Do It To perform this query, we correlated information from the following sources on the web: FEC: Raw Data Fillings by Gore 2000 Inc.: This site gives us a list of filings by the Gore Campaign which detail campaign contributions by individuals. FEC: Raw Data Fillings by Bush for President Inc.:This site gives us a list of filings by the Bush Campaign which detail campaign contributions by individuals. TIGER®:Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system: This site is maintained by the US Census Bureau and gives the latitude and longitude of a place given the street address. We first parse the first site listed above, and extract the URLs of the different filings by the Gore campaign. We fetch these individual files, and parse them in turn, extracting information about the individual donors. One of the pieces of information thus extracted is the street address of the residence of the donor. We then use this street address to probe the APB News web-site for the crime rating of the neighborhood of the donor. We extract this from their results page. We repeat this process for every Gore campaign donor that we find from the first FEC source. We repeat this for all the Bush donors using the second FEC source. We plot the results on the map. Back to top Do It Yourself Here is how you can do this yourself (see our Datasources section for links to appropriate pages): Go to the FEC page on Gore Filings. Click on each link there to retrieve the individual files. Save them to disk. Go through each of these files in turn, and for each donor, lookup up his/her street address. Look up this street address in the TIGER® database to find the corresponding latitude and longitude. Plot this on a map of the US. Repeat all the previous steps for Bush donors. Back to top
